Go Audio Awesome #17

January 25th, 2017

We prepare for Iowa-Illinois tonight by talking with Robert (@ALionEye) from IlliniBoard, but it's our podcast, so we spent most of the time talking about whether John Groce will get fired and making jokes.  So, you know, par for the course.

We're back from our holidays and diving head-first into basketball season, previewing tonight's Purdue game with Aneesh Ramaswamy (@aneeshswamy) from Boiled Sports.  His team has a bunch of tall guys and is probably the Big Ten favorite at the moment.  He's about as reasonable as you'll find for someone who supports OMHR.

After Aneesh ruins our Thursday, Adam and Pat discuss the recent changes on Iowa's football coaching staff.  Because when your 18th-year head coach fires someone for the first time, you've gotta spend at least 15 minutes on it.

Pretty much every time we do one of these podcast episodes, we have a guest.  We feel like you'd generally like to hear from a diverse bunch of people who know a lot about college sports and/or professional wrestling.  But let's not kid ourselves: It's the semi-informed opinions of your hosts that bring you back, week after week.  And so this week, @Adam_Jacobi and I answer questions from readers for over an hour.  It's ill-reasoned, fact-free and wholly unhinged from reality.  You should listen.

While Iowa football raced to the finish, Iowa recruiting imploded.  And while Iowa recruiting imploded, Hawkeye Insider's Derek Young (@DYoungScout) has become an essential Twitter follow.  He's been reasonable, calm, and more than willing to explain both the problems of Iowa's no-visit policy and the issues with particular commits who have broken it.  This week, he talks with us about the state of recruiting in Iowa football.  Needless to say, he knows more than us.

We're joined for Nebraska week by Erin Sorensen (@erinsorensen) of Hail Varsity, who answers the question: Is this a rivalry?  And if not, does it make this game better?  Also, there's a lot of discussion of Tommie and Ryker and Mike Riley and blackshirts and stuff.  It's wide-ranging, and it's informative.  Download and listen.

Adam and I don't usually have an outline for how our podcasts go, but except for certain circumstances -- like when Morehouse or the RLR guys are on and we've known them forever and just want to talk -- there's a general progression.  Start with some big picture stuff, talk about any sort of depth chart quirks, offense, defense, prediction.  It's not too complicated.

We entered Thursday night's podcast with Robert of IlliniBoard (@ALionEye) thinking it would be about the same as usual.  Sure, Illinois has Lovie Smith, which is kind of interesting.  And sure, they're 3-7 and playing for 2018 at this point.  But we didn't expect to get a comprehensive, detailed look at how Illinois is actually rebuilding.  Forty-seven minutes later, we'd barely gotten past the quarterback scramble.

So what I'm saying is, if you're looking for a podcast to prepare you for Saturday, this probably isn't the spot.  Everyone kind of expects Iowa to roll, even Robert.  But if you want to look at what our neighbors are doing to catch up -- and, frankly, how they're emulating early-00s Iowa in many ways -- you're going to get a really interesting discussion.  Sometimes, these shows have a mind of their own.

We tried to avoid it, but it was inevitable: The world kept spinning on its axis and revolving around the sun, and here we are one day before Iowa's home game against No. 2 Michigan.  The game probably won't be pretty, but it does give us a rare opportunity to catch up with mGoBlog founder Brian Cook (@mgoblog).  He's in good sprits.  He should be.  He has Harbaugh.

We're talking Iowa-Penn State with Bill DiFilippo (@bflip33) from our friends at Roar Lions Roar, which means...well, it means we're talking about people named McSorley.  Also, Saquon Barkley and James Franklin and the legacy of Christian Hackenberg. But mostly guys named McSorley.

We wrap up BALLERPALOOZA! with a good ole'-fashioned two-man podcast.  It's just Pat and Adam, talking about basketball as if they know something about it.  Our consensus: Iowa might not be quite as good this year, but it's all good!  No, seriously, it's fine.  There's a boatload of young talent on this team trying to find its way, and Peter Jok might score 30 a game while they find the path.

Iowa. Wisconsin. Yards in threes. Dust in clouds. Bowlsby-castrated bull trophies. And our annual talk with Jake Kocorowski (@JakeKocoB5Q), editor of Bucky's 5th Quarter. It goes long, as it almost always does.
