Go Audio Awesome 2.03

September 7th, 2017

It's Cy-Hawk Week, and if there's anything we've learned in all our years of doing this, it's that the X's and O's don't much matter.  So we passed on our usual discussion with CFB Analytics' Dan Becker (@_Danalytics) about ISU's quarterback and linebackers (at least until the end) and focused instead on the State of Cy-Hawk from the other side of the table.  Does the continuation of the series make sense for them?  Is Matt Campbell fundamentally changing the nature of their program?  Is he in it for the long haul if things go well?

Also, while we've got most of the audio issues worked out, Pat's audio is really loud on this one for some reason.  Apologies to your cubicle neighbor this morning.

It's finally Game Week, so we do what we always try to do: Find out just what we're facing next week.  Fortunately, longtime Wyoming beat writer/blogger Robert Gagliardi (@rpgagliardi) from Cowboy Chronicles and the excellently-named Wyoming Tribune Eagle and Laramie Boomerang.  After Robert scares us, Adam and I spend about ten minutes discuss our varying levels of terror headed into Week One.

Well the podcast is back and there's gonna be a theme song.

(Hey ya, hey ya the podcast's back)

Talking to @marcmorehouse so you know it's gonna be strong.

(Hey ya, hey ha the podcast's back)

We're working on the sound, but you still hear most of what we say.

(Hey ya, hey ha the podcast's back)

It's the only podcast til Marc and Hlas start theirs on Friday.

(Wait and see!)

It used to be that the last podcast of the basketball regular season would be to announce the Marchifornication bracket.  That's all changed now, because even in its down years, Iowa basketball is in the NCAA Tournament conversation. We're joined, as always, by our friend Chris Dobbertean (@ChrisDobbertean) of Blogging the Bracket, the SB Nation Tournament prediction site.  He's got Iowa out of the field now, but there's room for improvement.

We prepare for Iowa-Illinois tonight by talking with Robert (@ALionEye) from IlliniBoard, but it's our podcast, so we spent most of the time talking about whether John Groce will get fired and making jokes.  So, you know, par for the course.

We're back from our holidays and diving head-first into basketball season, previewing tonight's Purdue game with Aneesh Ramaswamy (@aneeshswamy) from Boiled Sports.  His team has a bunch of tall guys and is probably the Big Ten favorite at the moment.  He's about as reasonable as you'll find for someone who supports OMHR.

After Aneesh ruins our Thursday, Adam and Pat discuss the recent changes on Iowa's football coaching staff.  Because when your 18th-year head coach fires someone for the first time, you've gotta spend at least 15 minutes on it.

Pretty much every time we do one of these podcast episodes, we have a guest.  We feel like you'd generally like to hear from a diverse bunch of people who know a lot about college sports and/or professional wrestling.  But let's not kid ourselves: It's the semi-informed opinions of your hosts that bring you back, week after week.  And so this week, @Adam_Jacobi and I answer questions from readers for over an hour.  It's ill-reasoned, fact-free and wholly unhinged from reality.  You should listen.

While Iowa football raced to the finish, Iowa recruiting imploded.  And while Iowa recruiting imploded, Hawkeye Insider's Derek Young (@DYoungScout) has become an essential Twitter follow.  He's been reasonable, calm, and more than willing to explain both the problems of Iowa's no-visit policy and the issues with particular commits who have broken it.  This week, he talks with us about the state of recruiting in Iowa football.  Needless to say, he knows more than us.

We're joined for Nebraska week by Erin Sorensen (@erinsorensen) of Hail Varsity, who answers the question: Is this a rivalry?  And if not, does it make this game better?  Also, there's a lot of discussion of Tommie and Ryker and Mike Riley and blackshirts and stuff.  It's wide-ranging, and it's informative.  Download and listen.
